Amyloidosis Involving Only Periodontium: Report of a Case

چکیده
Received: 8 December 2006 Accepted: 18 July 2007 Abstract: Amyloidosis includes a wide range of disorders characterized by deposition of amyloid in different organs and tissues. Localized gingival enlargement due to accumulation of amyloid without involvement of other organs is a very rare condition. This article describes a 31-year-old male patient with amyloidosis involving only the periodontium of the anterior mandibular teeth with localized severe horizontal alveolar bone loss. To our knowledge this is the first case report that documents this condition.

Amyloidosis is characterized by an abnormal extracellular deposition of amyloid in different organs, where it usually causes some type of dysfunction. Its cause is unknown. Five different types of amyloidosis have been described according to the underlying disease; immunoglobulin amyloidosis, familial amyloidosis, senile systemic amyloidosis, secondary amyloidosis and hemodialysis-associa...
متن کاملA Rare Presentation of Multiple Myeloma: A Case Report of Hepatic Amyloidosis
The clinically reported case of liver involvement with multiple myeloma (MM) is rare. Amyloidosis, defined as a tissue deposition of clonal light-chain fibrils, has been reported in 10-15% of the MM patients. We described a rare MM patient with the primal presentation of fulminant hepatic failure and biliary system involvement due to amyloidosis. Our patient had the primal symptoms of hyperbili...
متن کاملPrimary Localized Vesical Amyloidosis Mimicking Bladder Carcinoma: A Case Report
Amyloidosis of urinary bladder is a rare condition and may be primary or secondary in nature. A case of primary localized vesical amyloidosis (VA) in a 40-yr-old man is described confused with neoplasm by cystoscopic, urographic. Surgical specimens obtained by transurethral resection (TUR) were diagnostic and histologically revealed amyloid deposits in sub-epithelial stroma with chronic inflamm...

We hereby report a 79-year-old Iranian man presenting with nail dystrophy and subsequent development of purpuric and ecchymotic plaques, hemorrhagic bullae, and infiltrated papules on the head, neck and trunk. Histological examination of the gingiva, bone marrow aspiration, and biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of primary systemic amyloidosis. In this case, nail dystrophy was the presenting sign o...
متن کاملSuccessful Diflunisal Desensitization in a Transthyretin Amyloidosis Patient with NSAID Allergy: A Case Report
Introduction: Amyloid diseases have been known to be hereditary, including transthyretin (TTR) amyloidosis where subunit protein mutations may occur in genes for TTR leading to the deposition of fibrils (low molecular weight subunits (5 to 25 kD) of proteins) in extracellular tissues. By reducing the formation of TTR amyloid, diflunisal, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), has shown ...
